Lake Tekapo Regional Park

This 165ha exotic forest on the south east edge of Lake Tekapo is only a few minutes ride from the Hostel.
There are currently 24kms in various stages of development.
These tracks are two way, and are shared with walkers and joggers.
Cowans Hill Trail
Distance: 3.2km
Difficulty: 2 (Easy)
This track is signposted just after the dam/bridge when leaving the village centre and heading in the direction of Christchurch. It is a short circuit track and is also well used by walkers. From the end of the trail, you can cross State Highway 8 and continue through the forest and along the lake, returning to the village centre via the Church of the Good Shepherd.
This is Richards favorite walk.
Alps 2 Ocean Trail
Lake Tekapo to Twizel
Distance: 54km
Difficulty: 2 (Easy)
​For a one day excursion, ride the first section along the Tekapo Canal, around Lake Pukaki taking in the views of Mt Cook, finishing in the town of Twizel for refreshments. Finish the day soaking in the hot pools at Tekapo Springs.
Lake Tekapo to Oamaru
Distance: 300+km
Difficulty: 2-3
The A2O trail is an easy grade and suitable for all abilities. It's just over 300km's from the Alps to the ocean at Oamaru and normally takes between 4-6 days.
Richmond Trail
Distance: 13km one way
Difficulty: 4
The Richmond Trail follows an old glacial terrace through tussocks and patches of native vegetation. Enjoy stunning views over Lake Tekapo and the Alps. The Richmond Trial can be rocky and has a few steep, rocky sections, making this one of the more technical rides in the area.
This trail starts and finishes in different places so two vehicles are required, an arranged pick-up, or you can ride back to the start along Lilybank Road. The trail has some very rocky and steep sections.
